Clothes & Emotions
Share this!

Recently, I commented on Instagram that I was wore cozy clothes to work one day. It had been a tough week, and I really wanted something soft and comforting to help me feel better. It made me wonder: how often do people dress based on the emotions or feelings they want to convey—sexy, powerful, relaxed, soothing, happy, or even sad?

Clothes as an Emotional Support Blanket?
Can clothes be worn like an emotional support blanket? Think of Linus from Peanuts (Copyright: Peanuts Worldwide) carrying around his blanket—it was a part of his wardrobe. Have you ever grabbed a fluffy sweater or your favorite sweatshirt to give yourself a big hug? Have you ever worn head-to-toe leather to feel powerful or protected? Or perhaps you’ve worn a fun graphic tee or sweater to bring a smile to your face and those around you? Or am I the only one?

Many of my clothes have a great tactile feel. I often joke to friends that I’m “petting” myself when I’m wearing velour, velvet, cashmere, etc. It’s like petting my dog, and that always makes me feel better. Leather is often associated with toughness because it’s a tough textile. It’s hard to pierce, therefore providing protection. I’m also a lover of a good graphic. I have sweaters with beagles, French fries, horses, and foxes on them. They make me happy and give me a little giggle.
It also made me reflect on how what you wear can become associated with a particular emotion or memory. For example, the cool orange corduroy pants I was wearing when I received some bad news—those went straight into the Salvation Army bag. I knew that if I ever wore them again, I would always think of that day and feel horrible. It’s the same when you wear black to a funeral, that piece now signifies a loss. Then there are pieces tied to wonderful memories: a wedding dress (love), a grandfather’s trench coat (warmth), a perfect find in Paris (wonder)… and so many more. These are the pieces you will probably never part with. You look at or wear them, and you’re instantly flooded with that emotion.

Dressing on a Whim!
Most days, I get dressed on a whim. It all depends on my mood, how my body feels, the weather, or whatever is happening that day. Some days, I need my clothes to function as armor. I’ll wear all-black or a badass piece of leather. Some days, I need to convey authority, while on other days, I might want to seem more approachable. Last year, after surgery, my body dictated what I wore. Comfort was definitely the main priority, and I made sure not to reinjure myself while getting dressed! Caftans, plush robes, and drawstring-waist pants became my best friends. I felt triumphant in the denim dress, when I posted on Instagram after my hiatus!

Fashion as Armor…
Bill Cunningham, the famous New York Times fashion photographer, once said, “Fashion is the armor to survive everyday life.” Fashion can not only protect you, but it can also be a clear reflection of your spirit.
I’d love to hear if you dress based on your emotions or your day! Is there a special piece that you always wear to lift your spirits or to feel très magnifique?
Let me know!
